Asbestos can have serious health consequences for workers when asbestos fibres released during activities such as the demolition, renovation, maintenance, or disturbance of older buildings become airborne and are inhaled. Prolonged or repeated exposure to asbestos fibres can cause serious diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
Workers who are at risk of exposure to asbestos should undergo appropriate baseline health assessments before exposure begins and participate in ongoing asbestos health monitoring where required. Regular monitoring helps assess respiratory health, identify potential asbestos-related health effects, support workplace health and safety compliance, and ensure appropriate measures are implemented to minimise further exposure to asbestos fibres.

Pre-Employment Medical
A pre-employment baseline asbestos health monitoring medical sets the baseline medical fitness of the employee before undertaking a job that involves exposure or further exposure to asbestos fibres.
Periodic Medical
Periodic asbestos health monitoring is conducted for employees who are regularly exposed to asbestos fibres in the workplace. These assessments help monitor respiratory health, identify any changes that may be associated with asbestos exposure, and support the implementation of controls to minimise further exposure.
Post Employment Medical
Much like a pre-employment medical sets a baseline prior to, or from previous exposure to asbestos, when an employee’s tenure in an asbestos exposed working environment comes to an end, they are to undergo an exit asbestos health assessment to assess their respiratory health.
The Asbestos Medical includes:
- Collection of demographic, medical and occupational history
- General and respiratory questionnaire
- Medical examination
- Spirometry test (Lung function assessment)
- Chest X-Ray

employee and/or employer needs:
- Audiometry (Hearing test) – $55.00 (incl. GST)
- Urine and Drug Screen (Instant) – $66.00 (incl. GST)

Frequently Asked Questions
The purpose of this health assessment is to evaluate whether the candidate is medically fit to commence work with asbestos fibres, and to continuously monitor the respiratory health of workers who are exposed to fibres in the workforce.
The frequency of health monitoring will depend on the worker’s level of exposure, workplace risk assessment, and applicable workplace health and safety requirements. Employers should ensure monitoring is conducted in accordance with relevant regulations and guidance.
Asbestos health monitoring may be required in industries such as building maintenance, construction, demolition, mining, manufacturing, waste management and recycling where asbestos fibre exposure can occur.
The results of the asbestos medical will typically be available 1 – 2 days following the candidate or employees’ completion of their Chest X-Ray at our designated radiology provider.
Excluding the time required to complete the pre-medical paperwork and for the candidate to complete their Chest X-Ray at our designated radiology provider, our asbestos medicals at Valewood Clinic typically take 45 minutes.
Please bring photo identification (e.g. driver’s license or passport), your Medicare card (if applicable) and any relevant medical history (if applicable).
Subject to the availability of the doctor and nurse originally designated to complete your medical, you may not be able to complete it. In this case, you will be charged a Did Not Attend fee and will be required to reschedule your appointment.
