Cat 3 and Rail Medicals

Melbourne Occupational Health Services offers the following Rail Medicals:

We provide rail medicals in line with the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers. All doctors are authorised by the Rail Industry Worker Program (RIW) to conduct medical examinations for workers in the rail industry. 

Cat 1 & 2 rail medical

(SAFETY CRITICAL WORKER HEALTH ASSESSMENTS)

We offer Category 1 and Category 2 rail medicals to assess a rail worker’s fitness for duty.

Medical conditions that are assessed to determine a rail worker’s fitness for duty include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Fainting / Losing consciousness
  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Neurological conditions, such as seizures, epilepsy and dementia
  • Psychological conditions
  • Sleep disorders
  • Substance abuse.

Cat 1 & 2 medical exams also involve assessment of hearing, eyesight and mobility to satisfy fitness for specific occupational duties.

Urine drug and alcohol screening may be required as part of these medicals based on specific employer and location criteria.

Depending upon patient health history and results of a rail medical examination, additional tests or a referral to a specialist may be required.

Cat 3 rail medical

(TRACK SAFETY HEALTH ASSESSMENTS)

We provide Cat 3 rail medical examinations for rail safety workers who work on or near the track, in an uncontrolled environment. Given the inherent dangers posed by working on and around railway tracks with oncoming trains, the Cat 3 medical focuses on:

  • Hearing
  • Vision
  • Musculoskeletal

Whilst, hearing, vision and mobility capacity is a specific focus of the Cat 3 medical, other tests may be required for medical issues that could lead to safety concerns for rail workers on or around the track.

Urine drug and alcohol screening may be required as part of these medicals based on specific employer and location criteria.
