Isocyanate Exposure Medical
From $330.00 (incl. GST)
Isocyanates are hazardous chemicals where unsafe exposure during activities including spraying and manufacturing operations, mining, varnishing and welding of pipe works can increase the risk of workers developing a range of short and long-term health issues. Short-term exposure can result in eyes, nose and throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting. Prolonged exposure, however, can lead to sensitisation, causing allergic reactions including occupational asthma, dermatitis, hives and rashes. It may also cause liver and kidney disease, and lung cancer.
Workers who are exposed to isocyanates in the workplace are recommended to undergo baseline health measurements before exposure, undergo periodic
assessments and when isocyanate exposure is confirmed. Regular monitoring for isocyanate exposure helps to detect early signs of occupational asthma and other respiratory diseases, identify skin conditions including dermatitis, monitor lung function and support workplace safety interventions.
Melbourne Occupational Health Services offers the following Isocyanate Exposure Medicals:
- Baseline medical
- Periodic exposure medical
- Exit medical
Baseline Medical
A baseline isocyanate medical establishes the worker’s medical fitness and health status prior to official employment and ongoing exposure, making it easier to identify changes to their health that may occur over time.
Periodic Exposure Medical
Periodic health monitoring is conducted for employees who are exposed to isocyanates in the workplace. The frequency is dependent on the level and nature of the worker’s exposure, risks and applicable regulations. The aim of evaluating the worker’s health periodically is to identify early signs of health issues and enable early workplace interventions before symptoms progress.
Exit Medical
Conducted when a worker permanently ceases work involving isocyanate exposure at their concluding workplace. The exit medical helps to document the worker’s health status at the end of exposure, identify any work-related conditions that may have developed, ongoing health management guidance and support workplace interventions if any health risks are identified.
The Isocyanate Medical includes:
- Demographic and past occupational history
- General and respiratory questionnaire
- General health assessment
- Spirometry test (Lung function assessment)
The following may also be required to be completed depending on the employee or employer needs or by the recommendation of the doctor:
- Urinary Isocyanate Metabolites Test (Melbourne Pathology) – $365.00 (incl. GST)
